THERAPY SERVICES

AYANA BOYD, MS (SHE/HER/HERS), STAFF CLINICIAN

The phone consultation is a 15 minute phone conversation where I get the chance to learn more about you and why you’re seeking therapy. We discuss your initial therapy goals; the therapy process; and my approach to therapy. I love to start with the phone consultation because this initial discussion can help us gauge whether we feel like a good fit for each other; identify expectations of therapy; as well as answer any initial questions about me, my style, my practice, or therapy in general.

The intake interview is our first session together. This first session is 60 minutes long, and is considered an “intake interview” because we gather a variety of information about various aspects of your life. For example, I’ll want to know what brings you to therapy and what do you hope to get out of coming to therapy. I may ask about your family history; your mental health history; your academic history; and your medical history just to name a few.

Individual therapy sessions are 1:1 appointments where I meet with you to work on your therapeutic goals. Determining how the session will be utilized, can be a collaborative effort whereby you and I identify what feels like the best use of our time together. For example, some clients like to pick up where the last session ended; some clients discuss a pressing issue that occurred between sessions; and some clients use the time to hone a new skill.

Group therapy sessions are offered based on interest and need. Group therapy is a treatment modality that is just as, if not more, effective as individual therapy. Group therapy offers access to peer-to-peer support, resource sharing, and experiential learning. I find that group therapy is a great way for folx to feel validated, seen, and understood in ways that feel affirming and growth promoting. Group therapy topics are to be determined based on need and interest. Group therapy topics of which I have facilitated historically are: the college experience; Dialectical Behavioral Therapy; Black women’s experiences (just to name a few).

EMDR stands for eye-movement desensitization reprocessing. EMDR is a trauma-informed approach to healing for folx who have experienced trauma. It was initially developed to treat folx who were diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, but has since been used to treat a varying degree of distress. EMDR uses a technique called bilateral stimulation which engages both hemispheres of the brain to reduce our reactivity to said trauma, while enhancing our self-efficacy skills to cope with the trauma. EMDR is focused on the direct memories associated with the trauma. The bilateral stimulation helps to change how the memory is stored, which in turn can decrease the associated symptoms. I am a Pre-Licensed Therapist on track to become a fully licensed LPC-MHSP. I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology from Middle Tennessee State University and earned a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University. While I may be new to the profession, I am not new to mental health issues or the therapeutic journey. I chose counseling because I want to give black women and girls a space to process, fall apart, piece themselves together, scream, laugh, etc. while not being judged for any of it. I practice from an eclectic approach consisting of Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy.

ayana's bio approach

I am passionate about working with African American women and girls who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, adjustment disorder, and relationship issues. My motivation is to give something to the community that I never had – a therapist who looks like me. My goal is to help others see they are deserving of all life has to offer and capable of achieving it.

I feel strongly that my training in Counseling Psychology, has made me equipped to facilitate, not only growth and change but empowerment among diverse populations. Resultant of personal expe- riences and clinical training, I place multi- culturalism, social justice, anti-racism, and advocacy at the forefront of my work. “Negotiating our place in the world is often influenced by the interworking of our culture and systems, all of which impact our development, wellbeing, and worldview.” SOME of my clinical interests include trauma (particularly identity-based trauma and interper-sonal violence), relationship challenges, identity exploration, diversity and inclusion, and body image. In my free time, I enjoy time with loved ones, traveling, shopping, and anything adventurous.

My motto is “find beauty in chaos” which means being open to looking on the bright side, embracing the healing process, and committing to growth daily despite the chaos happening in our lives.
